Manchester city centre has reclaimed its rightful place as the great trading centre of the north, England's answer to Dublin in every sense.

The feeling of renewal and renaissance is remarkable, genuine and widespread. Also of note are the Britannia and its less audacious but smarter sister Sacha's and the chicly modern and cool Malmaison. The support cast features the new generation of budget hotels with the opening of Jury's inn, Ibis, Premier Lodge, Quality Inns, the Castlefield or the inexpensive Outback Inn. all coming in under or just about £50 a night. Other openings are imminent too.

You could spend half the morning putting on and taking off calories while the in-house business centre facilities vie with each other for corporate custom, often with massive new investment.
In the evening many hotels also have their own night clubs or at the very least are a few blocks away from Manchester's vibrant bar scene, which now outshines its reputation as the nation's club capital.
