Fernandez-Castano collects rookie prize
09/11/2005
Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano has today been crowned the Sir Henry Cotton rookie of the year.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed a superb maiden season on the European Tour, finishing a highly credible 57th in the Order of Merit.
He also won a first tour title, scooping the KLM Open in June at the Hilversumsche golf club in what was only his 13th start of the season.
Speaking after collecting the prestigious award, Fernandez-Castano expressed his delight at winning and praised his predecessors who have won the award in the past.
"I am very proud to follow in the footsteps of Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia," he said.
"I am very surprised to win as my one and only objective at the start of the year was to keep my card.
"But winning the KLM Open was a big moment in my first season on the European Tour and I now have a two-year exemption which is important in helping me plan my schedule."
He added: "But even more important is that I continue to work hard and improve so that I can try to reach the same level as Seve, Jose Maria and Sergio."
