FA fears further Wembley delay
09/11/2005
The FA has today admitted it is unable to confirm whether or not the new Wembley stadium will be completed as planned, in time to stage next year's FA Cup final.
With the big day in the football calendar now just six months away, there is still plenty of work to be done on the trouble-laden stadium.
Large sections of seating have been put in place but some structural work still remains to be completed.
FA chief executive Brian Barwick said: "I don't know today where the cup final will be held.
"I will be at the 2006 FA Cup final but I don't know what stadium I'll be at. I hope it is Wembley."
The problem is believed to be ongoing disputes between the building contractors Multiplex and the FA surrounding the spiralling cost of the project.
And such is the doubt among the FA that Barwick admitted they have requested Cardiff's Millennium Stadium be put on stand-by in case building work in north London is not completed.
"If Multiplex is true to its word, it will be staged at Wembley. If not, then it will be at the Millennium Stadium," he added.
