Post offices to close in Manchester
13/08/2008
A total of five post offices in Manchester are to close as part of the national Post Office Network Change Programme.
This is despite a report produced by the city council that detailed the importance of each of the five post offices which were earmarked for closure last June.
It outlines how hard it would be for customers to access other post offices and the difficulties facing these branches to absorb extra customers.
Councillor Jim Battle said he is "very disappointed" at the news that five of the city's 63 post offices are set to close.
"Post offices are vital and underpin our neighbourhood centres," he stated.
"They provide an essential service to our communities, local businesses and local economy and we recognise that these closures will cause considerable disruption."
According to the Post Office, over 80 per cent of branches will be unaffected by changes to the national network.
