French firm plans Manchester car parks

French-owned firm Apcoa has announced that it has plans to open a number of car parks in Manchester city centre.

It intends to use distressed development sites and is looking to undercut the dominant car park company NCP by charging only £2 or £3 a day, reports Crain's Manchester Business.

Apcoa is looking to take advantage of a number of stalling developments in the city, which have fallen on hard times and ground to a halt as a result of the credit crunch.

Michael Pemberton, managing director of NCP, has stated that the company would welcome the competition in the northern city.

He commented: "It will keep us on our toes but I'd be surprised and disappointed if we hadn't closed down those opportunities given our strong relationship with developers."

Apcoa currently manages over 860,000 parking spaces, spanning 15 countries throughout Europe, and employs 4,500 members of staff.
