Council battles post office closures

26/08/2008

Salford city council has confirmed it is still investigating ways in which it can prevent a local post office closing.

The Post Office recently announced plans to shut the Adelphi branch, together with those on Lewis Street and Langworthy Road.

Almost 20 per cent of post offices in the country are currently under threat as the organisation undergoes a major restructure.

Opposition groups have been formed in many locations and in Salford, it is the council leading the protests.

It has been told that the Lewis Street and Langworthy Road sites will definitely close, but remains determined to save the Adelphi branch.

Councillor David Lancaster said: "There will be no let up in us voicing our concerns about the devastating economic and social impact these post office closures will have on the communities they serve."

The deputy leader added that the council would be complaining to government ministers about the closures.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18749072-ADNFCR
