Consultation on school closure
03/09/2008
A council is asking people what they think about plans to close a primary school.
Stockport council said that closing the Dale and Peacefield Primary School in Marple would make more money and resources available for village children.
There were already a lot of empty places in the classroom, the council said.
By closing Dale and Peacefield, the council could direct its money and resources on Rose Hill Primary.
A new eco-friendly school could be developed to secure local education in Marple for the next 60 years.
Plans for Marple schools go out for public consultation for two months from Monday.
Executive member for children and young people on Stockport Council councillor Mark Weldon said: "We also want to hear how we could make the changes as smooth as possible and what you think a new school would need to deliver for the benefit of pupils, their families, staff and the wider community."
He asked for people's views from all sections of the community.
However, critics are concerned about replacing schools.
Concerns over council private finance initiatives - contracts between councils and private companies to build schools then lease them back - have been aired by the National Union of Teachers.
The council did not say how it would be funding the modernisation project.
