Cameras will 'help terror fight'

27/08/2008

Automatic number plate recognition cameras have been introduced around Manchester Airport in a bid to help police catch uninsured or stolen vehicles.

According to Greater Manchester Police, the airport is often used a "gateway" through which car thieves exit and enter the UK.

The cameras can identify up to 600,000 licence plates in 24 hours by scanning them and then checking them against information from the Police National Computer database and the Motor Insurer's Bureau.

Manchester Airport Commander Superintendent Peter Turner said: "These new fixed camera sites will provide police officers with an additional source of information during the vital early stages of major investigations and will also assist in our continued fight against terrorism."

In other news, it was has been announced that Jet2.com will be introducing direct flights between Manchester and Olbia, Sardinia.

Flights from Manchester to Istanbul on Turkish Airlines have also been increased to ten passages a week.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18751735-ADNFCR
